Description
The Two Worlds of Jimmie Barker is the autobiography of Jimmie Barker, a Muruwari man whose life spanned much of the twentieth century in north-western New South Wales.
Told to Janet Mathews, Barker’s story records his experiences at Mundiwa, Milroy and Brewarrina Mission, as well as work, family life, hunting, fishing, language, cultural knowledge and interactions with government authorities and local communities.
The book also includes Muruwari stories, beliefs and place-name information, together with material relating to Ngiyampaa language and people. Barker’s account provides an important first-person perspective on Aboriginal life in New South Wales, including the impact of government policies, mission life, working conditions and race relations.
This revised edition was published by Aboriginal Studies Press in 1984, following the original 1977 edition.
